Hatred and division among the masses in America and the world over wear us down; try as we may to be a positive force for good, the continuing stream of bad news keeps coming, and inevitably, we may believe there’s too much darkness to overcome.
Please join me as I “catch” true accounts of selflessness, bravery, and kindness in a world gone mad…
The Lawn Boy
Middle aged and older folks complain about the younger generations, that they’re lazy and self-absorbed, and are always looking for a handout or the easy road. The millennials seem to them lost, a forfeited opportunity.
There is another genesis: young, not yet labeled. They are just beginning to emerge from their cocoons, and they bear watching. This bunch may surprise us all.
On Facebook this week, I came across a post about a young man from Cleveland, OH. Daron Taylor has a lawn care business. He saved his money to buy a bicycle, to which he has hitched a trailer, and with his parents’ assistance, he built the rig from wood he bought with his savings.
The trailer hauls his mower, weed-wacker, and assorted tools to job sites, allowing him to enlarge his service area. Daron Taylor, is a self-made man, who is still a boy. This young man makes me smile.
Just when you’re feeling warm and fuzzy about a youngster with drive, ingenuity, and a great work ethic, he pulls his business card from his pocket, and you note, without hesitation, this young man is going places.
I love his story because it is a tale of American ingenuity and exceptionalism in the making. It is the story of America, updated and modern, brimming with pride and confidence, hard work, imagination, and an idea. In this land,
our country, these are the basic qualities necessary to forge one’s path.
This is a story of hope, because Daron has already tasted the satisfaction and reward that work brings. He’s self-confident, which comes from knowing of what he’s capable, and that he can survive by his wits. With knowledge and self-discovery born of his entrepreneurial tendencies, young Master Taylor is miles ahead of many men and women twice his age and more.
Daron is a fortunate boy. In the video below, he mentions his parents who have helped him. Though drive may be in his DNA, even more important are his parents, right behind him to support and nurture his dreams. His behavior and polite demeanor are indicative of a strong presence in his life, those who model, challenge, and expect Daron to break barriers and strive for excellence.
His is the story that older generations lament; the American experience they feel is missing from the younger generations. But Daron is a precious green shoot for which we all must protect and show care, so that he may grow strong. His strength will serve as a beacon, drawing to him others of like mind and shining a way for those who would learn.
They are the future, and in a turbulent world, the hope of a new generation.
